Board Chairman, Dr. Kwame Achampong-Kyei



Dr. Kwame Achampong-Kyei is a man of distinction. He stands tall among the outstanding players in Ghana’s insurance profession and industry, having devoted entirely his working career to successfully promoting insurance and financial services in Ghana.

He is the stalwart behind the GLICO brand, a group of six companies thriving for thirty years in Ghana. The GLICO GROUP is made up of GLICO Life Insurance Company Ltd., GLICO Healthcare Ltd., GLICO Capital Ltd., GLICO Properties Ltd., GLICO General Insurance Ltd. and GLICO Pensions Trustee Ltd.

Dr. Achampong-Kyei left his comfort zone in Britain in the late 80’s, working with overseas blue-chip companies, to set up a life insurance business, because he believed that “a man cannot sit on another’s sun and shine”. So, he decided to walk into the dark and light up his own lamp by returning home to start a company and contribute to the economic development of Ghana.

He is a man of valor and highly regarded as one of the most astute and innovative businessmen in Ghana and within the insurance industry. He is very iconic and a beacon for the insurance sector having served as an Executive Council Member and General Secretary of the Ghana Insurers Association from 1993-2008. His tenure and leadership led to the formulation of the framework and ethics to guide the operations of the association. He was also instrumental in seeing to it that the identity and image of the association was founded and built on sound insurance principles.

Dr. Achampong-Kyei Dr. Achampong-Kyei also served on the Board of the Kumasi Asante Kotoko Football Club from 2004 - 2006. His stewardship and passion for success catapulted the team to great victories to become a formidable team to reckon with. If today, GLICO GROUP is passionate about supporting and promoting sports of Ghana’s national teams, it stems from the passion and enthusiasm Dr. Kwame Achampong-Kyei has for sports. He believes that sports create unity, wee-feeling and an atmosphere of equanimity amongst a people; an essential ingredient needed for business growth.

Dr. Achampong-Kyei has won several awards both locally and internationally including the prestigious Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIMG) Marketing Man of the Year Award (2008), and to date he is the only insurance professional to be adjudged as a Marketing Man. Other awards include the Order of the Volta National Award (2008), the Best Entrepreneur in Insurance (2010) and his recent accolade of a conferment of a Doctorate Degree by the London Graduate School (2015). This Doctorate Degree was in recognition of his extremely valuable achievements and contributions in leadership towards the workplace and the business environment. In conferring the award, the London Graduate School noted that Dr. Achampong-Kyei has dedicated his working life almost entirely to the Insurance Industry and has influenced society positively.

These awards and recognitions have come about as a result of his tenacity and unique business acumen, which have resulted in him leading the GLICO GROUP to attain enviable heights. In 2016, through his hard work and leadership, GLICO was awarded “for making traditional life insurance products accepted in Ghana’s market at a time when life insurance was neither understood nor demanded”.

Although Dr. Achampong-Kyei has served and still serves on several Boards including that of the Sovereign Bank Ltd., Golden Link Savings & Loans Ltd. and indeed all the companies under the GLICO GROUP, he finds time to travel locally and internationally to deliver speeches and papers as a way of sharing his experience and inspiring the next generation of entrepreneurs.
